About AU Foulum

AU Foulum is part of Aarhus University and is home to most of the university’s research in food and agriculture. Research areas include plants, animals, food, organic farming, bioenergy, environment, climate, soil, genetics and technology.

Within the centre you will find the Department of Animal ScienceDepartment of Agroecology and research groups from the Department of Food ScienceDepartment of Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Department of Engineering

The food and agricultural science research carried out at Aarhus University is among the best in the world. It ranks as number nine on the U.S. News Best Global Universities ranking and is thus the best university in Denmark and number three in Europe. 

Research in biobased production

AU Foulum has a combined area of approx. 590 ha and buildings covering an area of around 120,000 m2, including offices, laboratories, animal houses, machine storage and a biogas plant.

At Aarhus University a technology platform - BioBase - has been established, acting as a framework for research and development of production systems and technologies in relation to the refining of green biomass.

During the meeting, you will get a chance to visit these platforms.

Biogas
The biogas facility at AU Foulum became operational in autumn 2007 and is the world's largest biogas plant for research purposes. It can be used for projects in both biogas and slurry separation by researchers and companies alike from Denmark and abroad. The plant cost 25 million DKK to construct and is being expanded on an ongoing basis.

Biofuel Laboratory
Straw, energy crops and other biomass are increasingly used for the production of heat. To be able to test and develop boilers for biofuels, AU Foulum started using a new lab in September 2011.

The primary object of the lab is to improve the efficiency of smaller biofuel plants, reduce emission of environmentally damaging substances including carrying out incineration experiments with new types and different combinations of biomass.

Extraction of green protein
At AU Foulum, a pilot-scale facility for protein extraction of high-value components from green biomasses has been created. The pilot-scale facility produces two primary streams: a liquid phase and a solid phase consisting of the fibrous fraction.

A pilot plant for hydrothermal conversion of biomass to fuel has been created and officially inaugurated in May 2015.
